The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) is a Central Government scholarship programme introduced in 2008 by the Ministry of Education. The main purpose of this scheme is to support talented students from economically weaker sections and encourage them to continue their education after Class 8.
Under the scheme, selected students can receive a scholarship of ₹12,000 per year, which is equivalent to ₹1,000 per month. The scholarship can continue from Class 9 to Class 12, subject to the required renewal conditions.
Who Can Apply?
Students who are studying in Class 8 can apply for the NMMS examination if they satisfy the prescribed eligibility conditions. The student should generally be studying in a government school, local-body school or government-aided school.
Students studying in eligible schools must also satisfy the academic and family-income requirements.
Educational Qualification
The student should have secured at least 55% marks in the Class 7 examination. For students belonging to SC/ST categories, the minimum qualifying marks are generally 50%.
Students must also qualify in the NMMS examination conducted by their respective State or Union Territory.
Family Income Limit
Another important condition is the family income limit.
The student’s total annual family income from all sources should generally not exceed ₹3.50 lakh.
Applicants may need to provide the required income certificate and other documents during the application and verification process.
NMMS Examination Pattern
The selection examination generally consists of two papers:
Mental Ability Test (MAT):
This section contains around 90 multiple-choice questions. It tests the student’s reasoning and logical ability. Questions may include topics such as analogy, classification, series, patterns and logical reasoning.
Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT):
This section also generally contains 90 multiple-choice questions. It covers subjects such as:
- Mathematics
- Science
- Social Science
The questions are based on the prescribed school-level syllabus.
How Is the Scholarship Given?
Students who qualify for the examination and complete the required verification process are considered for the scholarship. The scholarship is generally transferred through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to the student’s eligible bank account through the National Scholarship Portal process.
Students must also satisfy the conditions required for continuation of the scholarship in Classes 10, 11 and 12.
